Disappointing Products #1

Before we get into the post I just want to say I know these products may be loved by some. In fact, one of the mascara's is a favourite among bloggers but for me these products are disappointing. I don't mean to offend anyone or come across as a brand basher but everything I say is based on my own personal experience with the products.

Model Co Fibre Lashxtend Extreme Black Lengthening Mascara, Shine Ultra Lipgloss 'Strip Tease' & Eyeliner Pencil 'Black 01': The only time I buy magazines now is when there's good freebies. Model Co has been on my radar for a few years now so when I saw Glamour mag for only a quid and the free Model Co products (each product is close to £20) I snapped up 3 copies. I just can't get my head round how they jusify the prices. The packaging is cheap and the quality of the actual products is shocking. The mascara barely coats the lashes, it takes three coats to achieve what one coat from a highstreet mascara gives. The fibres aggravated my eyes to the point where I had to remove it. I have sensitive eyes but I'm no stranger to mascara containing fibres but this just took the biscuit. It didn't lengthen my lashes like it claims. It didn't do anything really. The liner was just as bad. It's pigmented but smudges and wipes straight off if you touch your eyes. It reminds me of kids make up. The gloss is just a string fest. It smells nice and the colour looks nice in the tube but on the lips it's completely clear and as soon as you open your mouth horrible strings appear. Luckily I only paid £3 for all 3 so it isn't a big loss but I really feel sorry for anyone who has paid full price.

MAC Lip Pencil 'In Synch': After all the rave reviews I'd read on this product I decided to go ahead and make it my first lip liner purchase from MAC. I love the colour but Im afraid that's where the love ends. The texture is very solid and dry, even when warmed on the back of my hand it's no easier to use. It drags, looks patchy and highlights any and every flaw. You need to apply so much pressure to get any colour to show up. I posted about it back in September (link)

Rimmel Scandaleyes Mascara: I don't even know where to start with this one. The packaging is revolting and overly bulky but the reason I bought it (apart from having a discount voucher) is because it has a huge brush which I usually love but for some reason I don't get on with this one at all. I end up with mascara all over my lids, my lashes feel so heavy and almost point towards the floor and it's flaky. Rimmel have been bringing out brilliant products over the last year or so but this mascara isn't one of them.

Benefit They're Real!: I'm definitely in the minority here but They're Real! doesn't deliver any of it's promises on my lashes. So glad I got my hands on a sample as I was really tempted to buy the full size a few times. The only way I can describe how my lashes look after using this is baaaaaad!

MAC Viva Glam Nicki: This shade looks absolutely gorgeous in swatches which is why I ordered it but on me it looks like a bad quality lippy you would find in cheap palettes. It's not a bad product as such, I just don't like the colour and worst of all, it makes my teeth look yellow which is  never good.

Una Brennan Rose Hydrate Intense Moisture Mask: I honestly can't tell if this mask does anything in the way of moisturising my skin but what I can tell you is it stings my face so badly that I can't even use it now. I really wanted to try more from the rose range but have a feeling I'll react the same way to it all.

Have you tried any of these products?

  1. I really like They're Real, and with regards to the Rose Mask, perhaps you're allergic to something in it? I know I'm allergic to Rosehip so would never chance anything like that. I've not tried my Model Co Eyeliner yet, hope it's better than their other products then! x

    1. Everyone seems to, I'm definitely in the minority.

I'm fine with Rosehip, I use Rosehip oil every night but that mask makes my skin feel like it's on fire. Have no idea what I'm reacting to.

The eyeliner wipes straight off. I have a feeling the Model Co seconds/duds were given to Glamour, there's no way products at that price point should perform so badly. Hope you get on better with it than I did.

  3. I haven't used any MAC products in a long time, but you tend to believe the hype behind brands like that don't you. I have NEVER been a fan of Model Co. So-so quality and over-priced.

I love Benefit's mascaras, but as you say, what one girl swears by, another thinks is junk. I haven't tried any of the Una Brennan products yet, but your the first negative review I have seen. I'd be interested to know whats in it that has upset your skin.

    Great review Fran.

    1. MAC is such a hit and miss brand for me. I love the Paint Pots I've tried, MSF Soft & Gentle and the Cremesheen lipsticks are really good but the powder eyeshadows, foundation and that lip liner aren't for me at all.

I used to love Benefit's Bad Gal mascara but now I don't get on with it, my lashes are so picky.

I've had a look at the mask ingredient list but still don't know what could be causing it.

  4. I really don't get on with They're Real either! I've tried to persevere with it because I thought that so many amazing reviews can't be wrong but I've just given up with it now, it does nothing for me! xx

    1. Me too. I thought maybe once it dried out a bit it would work better but it still makes my lashes look really messy.

  6. I got the pink Models Co lip gloss in my Glamour magazine and I really like it! I'm actually wearing it over the top of Rimmel's Kate lipstick in 101 right now haha :) I do agree with you on the They're Real mascara though, I really don't get along with it. The forumla's too wet and makes my lashes look horrible! xx

    1. The pink gloss was sold out by the time I got there. Glad you like it though :) My lashes go in different directions and look really messy with They're Real! The formula is the wettest I've ever tried.

    1. A clear gloss from Rimmel would do the same job and not be a stringy mess.

  11. I don't like They're Real either. Makes my eyelashes look spidery and I don't like the coarse finish. I didn't like the Una Brennan mask either - scent was too strong for me, and I didn't notice anything. x

  13. Shame to hear about some of the products, I'd heard that the moisture mask was good, but as someone with sensitive skin I'd never want to test out something that can sting, so thanks for the heads up! x

    1. I really wanted to try the rose pre cleanse oil but I'm too scared to try anything else from the range now. I definitely don't recommend the mask for sensitive skin, my skin went crazy.

  14. I can't believe that about the Una Brennan mask!! I was going to buy it for for my bf but am worried he'll have problems with it now. Agreed on They're Real, I hate it! And Nicki makes my teeth look yellow too. You're not alone! Let me know if I can buy 'In Synch' off you xx

  17. Such a shame about Benefit they're Real! I love it but it's true, everything works differently on everyone. I've wanted that MAC lipstick for ages now and the colour does look gorgeous, now you've said it made your teeth look yellow I'm worried now.
Great post! I love reading these kind of honest posts. :)
